Tulane Avenue ELC Expansion
After opening a successful Early Learning Center on one of New Orleans' busiest thoroughfares, our client approached us seeking a second expansion. This expansion would solidify a campus for this thriving ELC. studio^RISE worked with the educator to create a mixed-use expansion with two apartments for rent on the second floor and a future plan for classrooms on the ground floor. This mixed-use approach would allow the center to bring new homes to a much needed market, expand the ELC's footprint, and remove a blighted property from a high traffic area.
The structure is a 1930s shotgun double that was raised in the 1950s to introduce a commercial ground floor akin to a corner store. The rounded storefront makes a unique marrying of typical New Orleans typologies, creating an eye-catching building. To match the form's individuality and the ELC's bright disposition, the wall facing the empty lot will feature a colorful mural and the building itself will be painted bright noticeable colors so children attending the ELC can easily recognize their place of learning.
